Tata Steel Coke Plant Blast: 16 workers injured, internal probe ordered

Jamshedpur, Nov. 16: Sixteen workers sustained varying degrees of injuries when a blast occurred at the Coke Plant inside Tata Steel works on Monday.

The explosion took place during a maintenance job in the ammonia scrubber unit of the coke plant at around 10.30 a.m. The injured were rushed to the Tata Main Hospital.

“There was a minor explosion in an ammonia scrubber and soon after the incident the injured were rushed to the Tata Main Hospital where they are undergoing treatment,” said Amresh Sinha, Head of Corporate Communication of Tata Steel. He added that the plant has been isolated and an internal enquiry has been ordered to find out the cause of the incident.

“All the injured were contractual labourers and suffered splinter injuries after the top portion of the ammonia scrubber exploded during maintenance work in the Coke Plant of Tata Steel,” said A K Mishra, Chief Inspector of Factories, Government of Jharkhand.

Factory inspector (Jamshedpur Circle- II), Birendra Singh Munda inspected the coke plant and said that the mishap took place due to the explosion in the ammonia scrubber chamber during the maintenance process.

An official of Tata Main Hospital said that the injured are being treated in various wards of the hospital. Most of them will be discharged in the evening.

Earlier, Amresh Sinha had said that 12 people were injured in the explosion.
