Jamshedpur, May 16: Keeping dead bodies in the morgue of MGM Medical College and Hospital (MGMCH) has become a problem of sorts these days.
According to hospital officials, there are a total of six boxes in the morgue’s deep freezer. Out of these, three are already occupied for the last three months. The remaining three slots are just too small a number to cater to the needs of the government hospital, officials said.
Sources said the issue of preserving dead bodies has arisen due to limitation of the deep freezer at the hospital morgue. Due to shortage of space, the relatives of deceased patients often argue and fall out with the hospital staff. The situation remains unresolved as there is little the authorities can do, given the current resources, sources said.
According to Dr Arun Kumar, superintendent of MGM Hospital, “The responsibility lies with the Sakchi police. We have informed them about the unclaimed bodies lying here. Due to delay in disposal of bodies, we face much inconvenience as relatives of deceased patients ask as to keep bodies in the morgue.”
According to ASI Bhagwan Singh of Sakchi PS, “We cannot dispose bodies until we get written instruction from the hospital superintendent. We may face trouble if some claimant comes to take bodies.”
