Ranchi set to host Durand Cup for first time

Ranchi: Jharkhand is set to add a new chapter to its sporting history as Ranchi prepares to host the prestigious Durand Cup for the first time. One of India’s oldest and most celebrated football tournaments is expected to begin on July 26, 2026, bringing national attention to the state’s growing sports infrastructure.

Preparations for the event were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Mukesh Kumar, Secretary of the Department of Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs. Officials discussed a comprehensive roadmap to ensure smooth conduct of the tournament, including stadium readiness, operational requirements, security arrangements, logistics, cultural programmes and spectator experience.

Kumar said hosting the Durand Cup would be a major step toward strengthening football culture in Jharkhand and promoting the state as a destination for major sporting events. He noted that successful organisation of the tournament could pave the way for Ranchi to host international football matches in the future.

The opening ceremony of Durand Cup 2026 is expected to showcase a blend of sports, patriotism, military traditions and Jharkhand’s cultural heritage. Planned highlights include performances by the Indian Armed Forces, special presentations by Army bands and displays of traditional folk and tribal dances reflecting the state’s rich cultural diversity.

Officials were directed to complete all preparations within stipulated timelines through close inter-departmental coordination. The focus, Kumar said, would be on delivering a memorable experience for players, officials, football enthusiasts and spectators.

The meeting was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Director Chhavi Ranjan, Culture Director Asif Ekram, Durand Cup nodal Army officer Colonel Hem Chandra and other senior officials. Participants expressed confidence that Ranchi’s maiden hosting of the tournament would be a landmark event for both the city and the state.
