Jamshedpur, April 22: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Padma Shri awards upon two eminent personalities from Jharkhand, Purnima Mahato of Jamshedpur and Chami Murmu of Seraikela, in a ceremony held in New Delhi.
Purnima Mahato, a renowned national archery coach, was also honored with the Dronacharya Award for her exceptional contributions to the sport. Born on August 15, 1976, in Jamshedpur, Mahato began her archery journey at the age of 10, training at the Tata Archery Academy.
Purnima Mahato has been a stalwart in the field of archery coaching for over a decade. She has not only produced excellent archers but has also been recognized for her outstanding contributions.
Over the years, she represented India in numerous international competitions and secured six gold medals in the National Games held in Pune in 1994.
Following her illustrious career, Mahato transitioned into coaching, mentoring renowned archers such as Dola Banerjee, Deepika Kumari, Komalika Bari, Pranita, and Bhajan Kaur.
Purnima Mahato embarked on her coaching career in 2000 when she was appointed as the coach for Tata Archery Academy. Since then, she has coached the Indian and state archery teams, making significant contributions to the sport.
Her coaching skills were recognized in 2013 when she was honored with the Dronacharya Award by the Government of India. Prior to that, she had received the Best Coach Award from FICCI in 2011.
Chami Murmu, affectionately known as Lady Tarzan, was also honored with the Padma Shri for her remarkable contribution to environmental conservation. Murmu has planted over 30 lakh trees, demonstrating her commitment to preserving nature and fostering a greener environment.
The recognition of these exceptional ladies highlights their significant achievements and contributions, bringing pride and honor to the state of Jharkhand.
