TMH brings life-saving Neonatal Therapy to Jamshedpur

First in Jamshedpur, second in Jharkhand; service to benefit 40–45 babies annually

Jamshedpur, July 4: Strengthening neonatal care in the region, Tata Main Hospital (TMH) has launched Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO) Therapy, an advanced life-saving treatment for critically ill newborns with severe respiratory complications. The service was recently inaugurated by Dr Vinita Singh, GMMS, marking another major milestone in TMH’s neonatal intensive care capabilities.

With a 35-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), TMH is among the leading centres in the region for specialised newborn care. The addition of iNO Therapy further enhances its ability to manage complex and high-risk neonatal conditions locally.

iNO Therapy is primarily used to treat Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)—a serious condition in which the blood vessels in a baby’s lungs fail to relax after birth. This restricts oxygen flow, placing significant strain on the heart and other vital organs, and can become life-threatening if not treated promptly.

In a healthy newborn, the lungs expand, and blood vessels relax after the first breath, allowing oxygen to circulate normally. However, in babies with PPHN, this process does not occur effectively. Inhaled Nitric Oxide works by relaxing the lung blood vessels, improving oxygenation, and supporting the baby’s recovery during this critical period.

The introduction of this therapy is expected to benefit approximately 40–45 newborns every year, ensuring timely access to specialised care and improving survival outcomes for critically ill infants.

Importantly, TMH is the first hospital in Jamshedpur and the second in Jharkhand to offer this advanced treatment. Until now, families often had to travel to metro cities to access iNO therapy, leading to treatment delays, financial strain, and emotional distress during medical emergencies.

With this service now available locally, newborns in Jamshedpur and neighbouring regions can receive timely, advanced care closer to home, significantly reducing the need for emergency referrals. Early intervention through iNO therapy can play a critical role in stabilising patients and improving survival and recovery rates.

The initiative reflects TMH’s continued commitment to delivering patient-centric, evidence-based care and strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand. By bringing advanced neonatal treatments within reach, TMH is not only improving access but also ensuring better health outcomes for the region’s most vulnerable patients, newborns in need of critical care.
