Jamshedpur records 136% surplus rainfall as monsoon gains strong momentum

Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum district, including Jamshedpur, has witnessed an exceptional surge in monsoon activity this year, recording 717.7 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 7—an astonishing 136% above the normal average, according to the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi.

Jharkhand as a whole has received 432.9 mm of rainfall, against a normal of 255.3 mm, marking a 70% surplus, one of the highest recorded for early July in over a decade. The abundant rainfall has brought welcome relief for farmers across the state, especially those engaged in paddy cultivation, which relies heavily on timely and consistent monsoon showers.

According to meteorological officials, 22 out of 24 districts have recorded normal to excess rainfall. East Singhbhum stands among the top three rainfall-receiving districts, surpassed only by Ranchi (670.8 mm, +155%) and Latehar (608.4 mm, +152%). This upward trend points to widespread and intense monsoonal activity, significantly bolstering soil moisture and water table levels across central and southern Jharkhand.

“The consistency and volume of rainfall over East Singhbhum is highly encouraging for agriculture and local water resource management,” said a senior official from the Meteorological Centre, Ranchi. “It is a pattern we have not seen in over ten years.”

Other districts that recorded notable rainfall include Seraikela-Kharsawan (607.2 mm, +126%) and Simdega (584 mm, +88%), indicating a strong monsoon presence in southern Jharkhand.

However, not all regions have benefitted equally. Garhwa (-19%) and Sahebganj (-21%) are currently in the ‘Deficient’ category, with rainfall well below expected levels. Officials are monitoring these regions closely for signs of delayed agricultural activity.

Looking ahead, the Ranchi weather office has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of the state, including parts of Kolhan, on July 8, with light to moderate rain forecasted through July 9. Residents in low-lying areas of Jamshedpur and adjoining blocks have been advised to stay alert due to the possibility of temporary waterlogging and disruption in movement.

With the monsoon picking up unprecedented momentum, East Singhbhum is poised for a productive kharif season, as long as the current spell continues without major interruptions.
