Jamshedpur: The Jugsalai police have uncovered an interstate network that smuggles banned cough syrups from Kolkata to Jamshedpur. Police arrested a local resident, Amjad Ali of Garib Nawaz Colony, after finding him with a significant quantity of codeine-based cough syrups meant for illegal sale.
Police apprehended the accused during a targeted raid near the Kharkai Rail Over Bridge in Jugsalai. During the physical search, officers recovered 10 bottles of codeine-based syrup and 52 pieces of Corex, both restricted substances that users abuse for intoxication.
During interrogation, Amjad confessed that he supplied these narcotic medicines to local youth and drug-dependent individuals across the city at inflated prices. He further revealed that he sourced the medicines from “Saba Medical” in Dhatkidih. Following his confession, police registered a complaint against Amjad, the medical store operator, and an unidentified supplier based in Kolkata.
Investigators believe smugglers transport the banned medicines illegally from Kolkata to Jamshedpur before distributing them across various parts of the steel city. Police have now expanded the investigation to dismantle this larger interstate drug supply network, and officials indicate that they will likely make more arrests in the coming days.
The latest seizure adds to a series of recent crackdowns on narcotics in the Jugsalai area. On April 7, police raided Bol Bam Transport and recovered 20 cartons of banned cough syrup valued at approximately Rs 9.66 lakh. Earlier, on April 15, authorities arrested a quack identified as Mumtaz Ahmad from Gauri Shankar Road after finding him with 174 bottles of T-Brancof syrup and 770 prohibited tablets. Authorities state that these intensified operations form part of an ongoing effort to smash organized drug networks and curb the growing misuse of prescription medicines among the city’s youth.
