Gulf Conflict Spikes Fuel Costs
Jamshedpur: The escalating conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has directly impacted Indian households as LPG prices surged across the country today. Effective March 7, the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder rose by ₹60. This hike forces Jamshedpur consumers to pay ₹952.50 per cylinder, a significant jump from the previous rate of ₹892.50.
Commercial Sector Faces Steep Increase
The price hike hits local businesses and traders even harder. Jamshedpur’s 19 kg commercial gas cylinders saw a massive increase of ₹114.50 today, bringing the new price to ₹2,031. This follows a smaller ₹31 increase on March 1, creating a cumulative financial burden for the hospitality sector.
Smaller commercial units also felt the pressure:
-
10 kg Commercial Cylinder: The price rose to ₹680.50, up from ₹638.
-
Business Impact: Local restaurants, hotels, and street food vendors now face higher operating costs, which will likely lead to increased food prices for the public.
Government Mandates Increased Production
As the Iran crisis threatens a global energy shortage, the Indian government has placed the energy sector on high alert. The Ministry of Petroleum issued a strict directive to all public and private LPG refineries to ramp up production immediately.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reassured citizens that India possesses sufficient energy supplies despite the geopolitical instability in West Asia. He emphasized that the government is taking all necessary steps to maintain a steady flow of fuel to the domestic market.
Strategic Reserves Secure Supply
Government sources confirm that India maintains adequate reserves of crude oil, petrol, diesel, and LPG. To prepare for potential supply disruptions in the Gulf region, Indian oil companies are currently diversifying their import portfolios and increasing purchases from countries outside the Middle East. While these strategic reserves ensure availability, the volatile global market continues to dictate the rising costs for local consumers.
