Jamshedpur: A sudden fire gutted six motorcycles and bicycles parked near the Tata Steel WSO Gate on Saturday afternoon. Prompt action by the Tata Steel Fire Brigade prevented a larger disaster, as firefighters brought the flames under control before they could spread to dozens of other vehicles parked nearby.
Thirty Minutes of Terror

The incident occurred on the route leading toward the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) office, where Tata Steel recently opened a new gate. Company employees frequently park their vehicles outside this gate before heading into their shifts. Around midday, flames began leaping from the parked vehicles, quickly escalating into a massive blaze that sent clouds of black smoke into the air.
Panic gripped the area for nearly thirty minutes as a large crowd gathered to witness the inferno. According to eyewitness accounts, the fire originated in a pile of garbage and scrap kept in an open space behind the local Gurudwara. The dry waste ignited rapidly, and the fire quickly jumped to five motorcycles and a bicycle parked adjacent to the site, reducing them to charred skeletons within minutes.
Firefighters Avert Major Loss
Local residents immediately alerted the fire department. A team arrived on the scene shortly after the call and successfully doused the fire after a rigorous effort. While the fire completely destroyed the vehicles belonging to employees such as Rajesh Sharma and Satish Kumar, the quick response saved scores of other bikes in the same parking lot.
The affected employees had parked their vehicles to report for duty inside the plant just hours before the blaze. While the exact cause of the ignition remains unclear, the fire broke out near the Tata Steel Maintenance and Service Pool office, raising concerns about safety protocols regarding waste disposal in the area.
Investigation Underway
Fortunately, the incident resulted in no injuries or loss of life. Management and locals breathed a sigh of relief once the fire brigade declared the area safe. The Jamshedpur police have now launched an investigation to determine whether the fire started due to a discarded cigarette, spontaneous combustion of waste, or foul play.
