Jamshedpur Unveils Master Plan to Tackle Traffic Chaos

Fixed Routes for 20,000 Autos Soon

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has drafted a comprehensive master plan to overhaul the city’s deteriorating traffic system and clear persistent bottlenecks. During a Route Technical Committee meeting on Friday, chaired by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar, officials approved several high-impact decisions aimed at making the steel city “jam-free.”

End of the ‘Auto Raj’: Fixed Routes and Regulation

Unregulated auto-rickshaws currently represent the biggest hurdle to smooth traffic flow. Over 20,000 autos operate on Jamshedpur’s roads daily without designated routes, leading to an oversupply of vehicles on certain stretches. The chaos intensifies when drivers pick up passengers in “No Parking” zones, causing hours of gridlock on major arteries.

To resolve this, JNAC will collaborate with the District Transport Officer (DTO) to implement a strict route-charting system. By assigning specific routes to each auto, the administration aims to balance vehicle distribution and prevent illegal stoppages on main roads.

Expanding Parking in Sakchi and Bistupur

The administration is prioritizing the expansion of parking facilities in the city’s busiest commercial hubs. Key initiatives include:

  • New Parking Zones: JNAC will invest ₹1.01 crore to develop new parking areas using paver blocks in Sakchi.

  • Curbing Illegal Parking: The Transport Department received direct orders to impose heavy fines on bus owners parking illegally at Sakchi Aam Bagan and on commuters abandoning vehicles at the roadside.

  • Capacity Survey: Officials will conduct a fresh survey of all existing parking lots to assess their actual capacity and identify areas for immediate expansion.

Crackdown on Encroachments and New Vending Zones

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar issued a stern warning to shopkeepers and business owners against displaying merchandise on roads and sidewalks. He emphasized that enforcement teams will slap heavy fines and initiate legal action against those encroaching on public spaces.

To clear footpaths permanently, the committee plans to develop new vending zones in every sector. This strategy aims to relocate street vendors to designated spots, ensuring that pedestrian walkways remain clear and traffic remains unaffected.

The high-level meeting included representatives from the Traffic Police, Tata Steel, the Chamber of Commerce, the Fire Department, and city managers.
