Jamshedpur: Experts emphasize corrosion management for sustainable development and circular economy

I3C-2025 conference: Industry leaders, researchers, and scientists converge at Jamshedpur to discuss advanced strategies in corrosion and coatings

Jamshedpur, Feb 7: The second day of the I3C-2025 conference, held at a hotel in Golmuri (Jamshedpur), witnessed a vibrant exchange of ideas on corrosion management and sustainable development. Organized by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, in collaboration with CSIR-NML, Tata Steel, and NIT Jamshedpur, the event brought together industry experts, research scholars, and professionals from across the globe. A key takeaway from the conference was the call for integrating corrosion management strategies into sustainable development goals, aligning with the global movement toward circular economy models.

The morning session kicked off with impactful plenary, keynote addresses, and parallel technical and poster sessions. Experts from both national and international platforms delivered insights into the latest developments in corrosion monitoring, predictive modeling, and advanced coatings. The parallel poster sessions fostered interactive discussions among participants, providing a platform for researchers to showcase their work and explore collaboration opportunities.

One of the day’s highlights was the panel discussion on “Corrosion Challenges, Sustainable Development, and the Circular Economy – Way Forward.” Moderated by Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NML, the panel featured distinguished experts, including Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director CSIR-NML; Ujjal Chakraborti, Executive in-charge, Tata Tinplate; Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director CSIR-IMMT Bhubaneswar; and Praveen Thampi, Chief CRM, Tata Steel Kalinganagar.

The panelists emphasized the need for a holistic approach to corrosion management that goes beyond initial costs and focuses on long-term sustainability. They discussed how integrating sustainable practices can reduce material waste and optimize resources, aligning with the global shift towards circular business models. “Material scientists have a vital role in addressing environmental issues while ensuring economic growth,” noted Dr. Ramanuj Narayan.

The valedictory session featured Chief Guest Ujjal Chakraborti, Executive in-charge of Tata Tinplate, and Guest of Honor Dr. Ramanuj Narayan. Other dignitaries present included Dr. Ashok Kumar, Chairman of IIM; Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chairman of I3C; Dr. A. N. Bhagat from Tata Steel; and several experts from industries, academia, and R&D institutions.

During the closing ceremony, winners of the oral and poster presentation sessions were felicitated for their outstanding contributions. The oral presentation winners were Nemai Chandra Gorain (Tata Steel), Mahesh G. Wanuj (CSIR-NML), Saikat Mandal (IIT Kanpur), Anushri Nag (Tata Steel), Lalit Meena (CSIR-NML), Tanaji K Chavan (IIT Dhanbad), Bharat Singh Chahar (IIT Kanpur), Arindam Chakrabarty (IICT Hyderabad), Y. Usha (CSIR-NML), and Juan David M Guerrero (IIT Kharagpur).

Poster presentation winners included Rohit Kumar, Apurba Maity, Devina Ratnam, and Suman Pradhan.

Reflecting on the event, delegates highlighted the enriching experience and the wealth of knowledge gained through discussions and presentations. Dr. Tapan Kumar Rout, Principal Scientist at Tata Steel and Convenor of I3C, delivered the closing remarks. He expressed gratitude to the speakers, sponsors, and participants for their contributions, urging continued collaboration to advance global sustainability and innovation.

With a renewed focus on long-term environmental impacts and resource optimization, the I3C-2025 conference reinforced the importance of addressing corrosion challenges in building a more sustainable future.
