Accidents inside Tata Steel plant must be reported immediately: VP Safety Rajiv Mangal

Jamshedpur, Feb 7: A circular issued by Rajiv Mangal, Vice President of Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel has reiterated the importance of timely reporting of workplace incidents. Referring to the company’s Accident Reporting Protocol (SS/GEN-08), the circular highlights the rising concern over delayed reporting of incidents due to various reasons, which affects the investigation process and timely support to injured employees.

Mangal emphasized that incidents should be reported immediately to respective line managers and safety professionals, even if no apparent injury is observed at the time of the incident. He pointed out that in several cases, injuries manifest later in the form of pain or complications. When incidents are reported after a delay, it becomes challenging to determine whether they occurred during work hours or outside the workplace, complicating ex-gratia claims.

“All incidents, whether resulting in visible injury or not, must be reported immediately. This applies not only to incidents within the plant but also to incidents occurring while commuting to or from the factory,” the circular stated.

Failure to report incidents promptly may result in employees being denied medical leave benefits and ex-gratia support. The circular aims to ensure the smooth flow of information and necessary assistance for those affected by workplace incidents.
