Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Mahanagar unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a major demonstration outside the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday. The protest targeted the state government’s handling of worsening electricity outages and severe drinking water shortages during the peak summer heatwave.
Symbolic Protests and Political Leadership
A significant number of BJP workers and supporters gathered at the district headquarters, led by high-profile figures including MLA Purnima Sahu.
In a symbolic move, women activists under Sahu’s leadership marched with earthen pots on their heads. The demonstration aimed to highlight the daily struggle of residents who face dry taps and are forced to fetch water from distant locations. Protesters stated that the dual crisis of power cuts and water scarcity has disrupted household activities, local businesses, and student preparations.
Calls for Government Accountability
Addressing the crowd, Purnima Sahu alleged that the state administration has failed to implement corrective measures despite the rising heat. Former CM Raghubar Das emphasized that providing basic civic amenities remains the government’s primary responsibility, an area where he claims the current leadership has failed.
The agitation concluded with the submission of a formal memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. BJP leaders warned that the party will escalate its protests across the district if the administration does not immediately restore consistent power and water supplies.
