Jamshedpur, Aug 8: The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, welcomed students and teachers from Govind Vidyalaya, Tamulia, for a special laboratory visit aimed at fostering scientific curiosity and awareness. The programme, held under the CSIR-Jigyasa Virtual Laboratory project, saw the participation of 48 students and two teachers.
The day began with an inaugural session, where CSIR-NML Director Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury delivered the welcome address. He highlighted the institute’s 75 years of contributions to national development through technological innovations and pioneering research.
Senior Scientist Dr. Animesh Jana, from the Institute Management & Development Centre (IMDC), spoke on CSIR-NML’s research activities and the objectives of the Jigyasa programme, which seeks to connect students with scientific research through interactive learning.
Students and teachers toured various research divisions, including the Applied and Analytical Chemistry Division, creep testing facilities, non-destructive testing of metals, e-waste recycling, and brass melting units. They also witnessed demonstrations of do-it-yourself (DIY) science kits, designed to make complex concepts more accessible and engaging.
The visit concluded with a vote of thanks and group photographs. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity, describing the visit as an enlightening and inspiring experience that provided a rare glimpse into cutting-edge research and practical applications in metallurgy and material science.
