Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Thursday spoke against politicizing criminal incidents like the DD Bar Murder case. Addressing a public and party meeting at his residence, Roy clarified that the Jamshedpur Bandh called for Friday, July 3, does not aim to target the state government. Instead, the shutdown aims to pressure the district administration to arrest absconding criminals and implement permanent security measures to prevent future tragedies.
“The government must not view this protest as an action against it. The administration must ensure such heinous crimes do not recur,” Roy said, urging the state authorities not to create hurdles during the peaceful protest.
The all-party meeting began with attendees observing a two-minute silence in memory of Himanshu Singh, who was recently murdered in the high-profile DD Bar shooting incident.
Calls for a Voluntary, Mass Shutdown
Roy appealed to the Jamshedpur community to ensure a historic, spontaneous shutdown to send a clear message to criminal elements and the administration. The senior legislator blamed police patronage for the rising tide of illegal activities in the steel city.
“Hubs for gambling, illicit liquor, and drug abuse are thriving across Jamshedpur solely because they enjoy police protection,” Roy alleged. He demanded an overhaul of the local police station peace committees and alleged that they are packed with “unworthy elements” who have no interest in maintaining law and order.
Rising Crime Figures Spark Alarm
Several prominent local leaders backed the bandh call, citing a sharp decline in Jamshedpur’s law and order situation over the past year. Jharkhand Kshatriya Sangh President Shambhunath Singh claimed that the city witnessed over 1,300 assaults with sharp weapons in the last 5 to 6 months alone. He termed it a massive failure of the local police and pledged his outfit’s full support to the bandh.
