Kolkata (IANS): The West Bengal Police have arrested influential Trinamool Congress leader Iftikhar Ahmed, alias Pappu, in East Burdwan district. Ahmed faces multiple criminal charges, including running an armed extortion racket and issuing death threats to local businessmen.
The police arrested Ahmed on Wednesday from the Viringi area in Durgapur, located in the neighbouring West Burdwan district. Ahmed is the husband of former Burdwan Municipality councillor Shefali Begum, who resigned from her post just last month.
When police produced Ahmed before the Burdwan District Court on Thursday, they sought 10 days of custody for a detailed investigation. The court, however, granted a three-day police remand.
The Extortion Network & Political Links
According to investigators, Ahmed systematically used his political muscle to extort money from residents and traders around the Burdwan railway station and across Burdwan city.
- Modus Operandi: Police state that Ahmed used illegal firearms to intimidate victims, suppress political opposition, and establish an atmosphere of fear in the locality.
- The Blueprint: The current probe incorporates evidence from multiple criminal cases filed against Ahmed between 2019 and 2026.
- The Syndicate: Investigators claim Ahmed amassed a massive fortune by leveraging his close ties with Khokan Das, the former Trinamool MLA from the Bardhaman Dakshin constituency. The gang subsequently funneled and invested this extorted money into real estate and various businesses across West Bengal.
Police officials stated that Ahmed has cracked during interrogation and promised to help investigators map out his wider extortion network and locate hidden illegal weapons.
The Trigger Complaint
The immediate arrest stems from a written complaint filed on May 26 this year by a local resident, Shivshankar Chowdhury.
Chowdhury alleged that after he refused to pay protection money, Ahmed’s henchmen attacked and vandalized his shop near the Burdwan railway station. The attackers held Chowdhury at gunpoint and threatened to kill him. When his wife attempted to intervene and protest, the gang assaulted her, barged into their home, and looted cash and gold ornaments.
