New Delhi (IANS): Delhi Police have busted a fake marriage syndicate run by a Jharkhand-based couple and their associates. The gang targeted unmarried men, staging fake weddings to dupe them of large sums of money.
Police have arrested three individuals—including a husband and wife originally from Jharkhand’s Gumla district—for allegedly cheating a Rajasthani groom of ₹6 lakh.
The Jharkhand Connection Unravels
Investigators exposed the interstate racket after tracking a missing person report filed in Delhi. The arrested mastermind, a 34-year-old woman identified as Lovely (alias Lalita), and her husband, Kamal Lohra, both hail from Gumla, Jharkhand.
While the couple lived in Delhi staging these elaborate scams, their network extended deep into Rajasthan, where they hunted for vulnerable grooms. Police also arrested their Delhi-based associate, Deepu (alias Rakesh Ekka), a resident of Raghubir Nagar.
How the Scam Worked
According to the West District Delhi Police, the case came to light after someone lodged a missing report for Lovely at the Khyala Police Station on June 18.
A dedicated police team—led by SI Kishor (In-charge, Raghubir Nagar Police Post) and supervised by ACP Tilak Nagar Dr. Garima Tiwari—used technical surveillance and local intelligence to track Lovely to the Pali district in Rajasthan.
During interrogation, Lovely dropped a bombshell:
- She confessed that she had been married to Kamal Lohra for 18 years, and the couple shares four children.
- She admitted that she, her husband, and their associates (Deepu, Ankit Verma, Deepika, and Gopal) ran a structured fake marriage racket.
- On June 1, the gang presented Lovely as an unmarried woman and wedded her to Shravan Vaishnav, a resident of Jalore, Rajasthan.
The syndicate collected ₹6 lakh from the unsuspecting groom and divided the cash among themselves. Investigators revealed that Lovely planned to flee the matrimonial home with additional cash and valuables shortly after the wedding.
Police Action and Next Steps
Following a formal complaint from the victim, the Khyala Police Station registered an FIR on June 29 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Current Status: Police have arrested Lovely, Kamal Lohra, and Deepu. The accused have confessed to targeting single men multiple times by presenting married women as eligible brides.
The police have already identified the remaining gang members—Ankit Verma, Deepika, and Gopal—and are conducting raids to arrest them. Investigators are now probing whether this syndicate has defrauded families in Jharkhand, West Bengal, or other states.
