Jamshedpur: The political atmosphere within Tata Workers Union is intensifying as the prospect of elections looms in December. According to regulations, the new committee is mandated to assume office by February, and with the last elections held on January 31, 2021, and certificates awarded in February, speculation arises that elections must be conducted by February. With only two months remaining, the expectation is for elections to be announced by the end of January.
Per the union’s constitution, the election officer must be selected ahead of the elections, leading to the formation of an election committee. All election processes will be overseen by the election officer. The union is set to elect 11 office bearers through 214 committee members. The election will commence after the committee members are elected, and subsequently, they will select the office bearers.
Complicating matters is the vacancy of numerous committee member positions, with nearly two dozen posts remaining unfilled. According to regulations, the election process for vacant posts should commence within 15 days, followed by elections within a month. However, the election for over 24 vacant posts has not taken place to date, leading to concerns of non-compliance with the constitution. If this issue persists, legal repercussions may arise, potentially leading to a case being brought before the High Court.
The Tata Workers Union elections have historically been marked by legal disputes, necessitating government-supervised processes. With the possibility of the matter reaching the court again, potential complications may arise, further adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming elections.
