Seraikela-Kharsawan, April 22 : A tragic road accident on the New Bypass Road under Chandil police station area claimed the life of a college student and left two others seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM near Bhalukkocha on NH-32/18 when a speeding trailer (JH09BG0332), reportedly en route from Purulia to Jamshedpur, ran over a motorcycle carrying three students of Singhbhum College. All three were riding on a single bike at the time of the accident.
The deceased, identified as 20-year-old Rohit Mahto, suffered fatal injuries after getting trapped under the rear wheel of the trailer and being dragged for nearly 50 feet, leaving his body severely mutilated.
The two other students, Akash and Kranti Mahto, were thrown off the bike and sustained critical injuries. All three belong to Jhimdi village under Nimdih police station.
According to preliminary information, the students had visited Chandil Dam after completing college-related work and were returning when the accident took place.
On getting information, Chandil police station in-charge Dilshan Birua reached the spot with a team. With assistance from local residents and members of the Visthapit Adhikar Manch, the body was recovered and sent to Seraikela Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
The injured were initially admitted to the Community Health Centre in Chandil and later referred to MGM Hospital for advanced treatment.
Traffic Chaos at Pitki Gate Under Scrutiny
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent traffic congestion at Pitki railway gate under the Adra division of South Eastern Railway. Daily traffic jams stretching up to 5 km on one side and 3 km on the other have become a major concern for commuters.
Police officials stated that such congestion often leads to reckless driving, as motorists attempt to bypass long queues, increasing the risk of accidents.
Station in-charge Dilshan Birua emphasized the importance of road safety, stating that wearing helmets could have reduced the severity of the injuries. He urged two-wheeler riders to follow safety norms strictly.
Eyewitnesses blamed the trailer driver’s negligence, alleging that the vehicle was at high speed and failed to give way. The trailer has been seized, but the driver is currently absconding.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Demand for Infrastructure Improvements
Local groups have renewed their demand for the construction of an overbridge at Pitki railway crossing, citing repeated accidents and daily traffic snarls. They have also called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and no-entry regulations for heavy vehicles on the bypass.
The administration is now under pressure to take concrete measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
