Jamshedpur, October 6: The East Zone Regional Abilympics 2024 concluded at the Tata Steel Technical Institute in Jamshedpur, celebrating the exceptional talents of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) from across the region. Organized by the National Abilympic Association of India (NAAI), the event featured 100 PwD participants from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha, competing in 15 vocational categories, including Information and Communication Technology (ICT), crafts, food services, and hospitality.
This year’s competition saw intense rivalry, with 16 participants winning medals: 4 Gold, 5 Silver, and 7 Bronze. The event highlighted the importance of vocational skills in empowering PwDs and integrating them into the workforce.
In the ICT category, Chinmay Mandal from West Bengal won Gold in Word Processing, while Jyotirmayee Pradhan from Odisha secured Silver. The Photography category saw Paras Mani Mandal clinch Gold, while Mukesh Kumar from Bihar earned Silver in Data Processing.
The Crafts category showcased artistic creativity, with Bihar’s hearing-impaired Shubhra Sinha winning Gold in Painting. Bronze medals were awarded to Vicky Sharma from Jharkhand in Painting and Rinki Kumari from Bihar in Embroidery.
In the Hospitality and Restaurant Services category, Odisha’s hearing-impaired Nityanand earned a Bronze medal among 25 participants. The standout category was Tailoring & Dress Making, where seven PwDs secured top honors. Bihar’s Shamim Alam won Gold in Tailoring, while Vinod Kumar claimed Silver. In Dress Making, local talent from Jamshedpur, Gulafshan Bano, won Gold, Yasin Ansari from Bihar took Silver, and Kunti Kumar from Jamshedpur earned Bronze.
Dr. Jitender Agarwal, Secretary General of NAAI and Founder & CEO of Sarthak Educational Trust, praised the participants, saying, “This year’s Abilympics stands as a testament to the talent and determination of PwDs across Eastern India, reflecting their readiness for workforce inclusion.”
Health Minister Banna Gupta inaugurated the event. Partners like Tata Power (TPCDT), Tata Steel Foundation, IHCL, and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) played vital roles in the event’s success, emphasizing the importance of vocational skills in achieving self-reliance for PwDs.
