Two injured during helmet checking drive in Jamshedpur, protesters block road

Residents blame unsafe traffic checking practices

Jamshedpur, June 14: A man and a woman riding a scooty were seriously injured in a road accident near the RD Tata Roundabout in Sakchi on Sunday. The incident triggered public outrage, with local residents blocking the road and protesting against the administration.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred while a helmet-checking drive was being conducted by traffic police near the roundabout. Locals alleged that police personnel were checking vehicles from concealed positions along the roadside. The scooty riders, who were reportedly not wearing helmets, panicked after noticing the checking drive and suddenly accelerated their vehicle.

At the same time, a speeding Mahindra pickup van approaching from behind allegedly hit the scooty. The impact threw both riders onto the road, leaving them seriously injured. People present at the spot immediately rushed to help the victims and arranged for an ambulance to take them to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) for treatment.

Following the accident, a large number of residents gathered at the site and expressed anger over the manner in which helmet-checking drives are conducted in the area. Protesters claimed that similar incidents had occurred in the past and demanded that traffic enforcement be carried out in a safer and more organized way.

The agitated crowd blocked the road and raised slogans against the administration, leading to traffic disruption and long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road. The situation remained tense for some time.

After receiving information about the incident, police and administrative officials reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters. The officials assured the crowd that the matter would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken.

Following the assurance, the protesters lifted the road blockade and traffic movement returned to normal. Both injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at TMH. Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, while official information regarding the condition of the injured is still awaited.
