Jamshedpur, Aug 20: In a significant consumer rights ruling, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, West Singhbhum, has imposed a penalty of Rs 2 lakh on ASL Motors (Adityapur and Chaibasa) and its sub-dealer. The case was filed by Pulhatu resident Deepak Kumar Thakur, who alleged that instead of delivering a brand-new Tata Nexon Smart Plus SP model, he was handed a repainted car with technical defects.

Thakur had booked the vehicle on December 6, 2023, but at the time of delivery, the car allegedly had rusted parts, repainted doors and a faulty gear system. He filed a complaint with the Commission on June 27, 2024.

After hearings, the Commission found that the company had delivered a different and defective vehicle, terming it an “unfair trade practice.” The order, issued on August 19, 2025, directs ASL Motors to pay Rs 2 lakh in compensation within 45 days, failing which the company will also pay 9% annual interest on the amount.

The ruling has been welcomed as a warning to automobile dealers engaging in malpractice. Consumer advocates said it reinforces the need for stricter compliance to protect customers from fraudulent sales practices.
