Hyderabad (IANS): The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) on Thursday dismantled a massive interstate drug trafficking syndicate operating primarily out of Jharkhand. The network covertly distributed ‘ganja’ (cannabis) to 21 states across India by exploiting India Post’s Speed Post and courier services.
The breakthrough came after Hyderabad police arrested the gang’s key mastermind, 26-year-old Satyam Misra, a native of Giridih district, Jharkhand.
Four other key players from Jharkhand and Mumbai—including Satyam’s brother Shubham Misra (alias Shubham Dada), Rahul Jha (alias Chote Misra), Sachin Misra, and Santosh Pandit—are currently on the run.
Sourced and Packed in Giridih & Bokaro
The syndicate ran a highly structured, corporate-style operation directly from Jharkhand:
- The Sourcing: The gang cultivated ganja directly in their native village in Giridih and also procured additional stock from unidentified local sources across Jharkhand.
- The Post Offices: To ship the contraband, the accused utilized the Isri Bazar Post Office (Giridih) and Phusro Bazar Post Office (Bokaro).
- The Deception: The gang packed the consignments in Jharkhand, while their dispatch agent, Rahul Jha, booked them via Speed Post by falsely declaring the contents as “medicines.”
The syndicate relied heavily on WhatsApp and other social media platforms to aggregate pan-India orders, coordinate delivery drops, and process digital payments.
Massive Financial Scale: ₹35 Lakh a Month
Before H-NEW disrupted their network, the Jharkhand gang ran an incredibly lucrative operation:
- Daily Volume: They executed 80 to 100 orders per day across India, dispatching 8 to 10 parcels daily through Jharkhand post offices.
- Pricing: Each parcel contained 50 to 250 grams of ganja, retailing between ₹1,500 and ₹8,000.
- Turnover: The syndicate raked in nearly ₹1 lakh daily, translating to ₹30 to ₹35 lakh per month and an annual turnover of ₹4 to ₹5 crore.
Apart from postal deliveries, the gang targeted Mumbai, where they fed a network of over 1,000 regular consumers. Shubham Misra routinely smuggled bulk quantities of ganja by train from Jharkhand to Mumbai, storing it with local coordinators.
How the Hyderabad Police Traced the Jharkhand Link
The syndicate’s pan-India run ended when H-NEW intercepted a suspicious ganja parcel in Hyderabad that originated from the Isri Bazar Post Office in Jharkhand. Interrogating the local recipient exposed the entire supply chain.
Police traced a second parcel coming from the Phusro Bazar Post Office to another Hyderabad customer. Following the busts, Hyderabad police arrested two local buyers—Sushanth Vyas and Laddu—and seized 2 kilograms of ganja. The main gang members in Jharkhand immediately changed their identities and fled when news of the Hyderabad arrests broke.
Major Security Loophole Exposed: Parcels Flown via Air
The investigation exposed a critical national security vulnerability: the ganja parcels traveled across state lines via trains and commercial flights completely undetected. Notably, the consignments sent to Hyderabad arrived via air cargo without undergoing any scanning.
Official Action: In light of this major security gap, the Hyderabad City Police will formally write to central government departments demanding mandatory scanning protocols for postal parcels. Furthermore, the city police have ordered all private courier agencies to strictly scan every parcel they book and deliver.
