Chakulia: A case of mob justice unfolded in Jodsa village under Chakulia police station late Friday evening when two alleged goat thieves were brutally beaten by villagers, resulting in their deaths. The incident has raised serious concerns about law and order in the region.

According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rishabh Garg, the victims, identified as Bholanath Mahato of Jirapara village and Kinsku Behera of Kusmati village, were caught red-handed while attempting to steal goats. “One of them died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries at MGM Hospital,” he confirmed.

Eyewitnesses reported that the two suspects were trying to escape with the stolen goat on a motorcycle when the sound of a bell tied around the animal’s neck woke up its owner, Harbind Nayak. Sensing something was wrong, Nayak rushed outside and caught the thieves in the act. He immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby villagers, who quickly surrounded the duo.

A heated confrontation ensued and in a fit of anger, the mob attacked Mahato and Behera. The villagers repeatedly assaulted them with sticks and other objects, leaving them severely injured. One of the men succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while the other was rushed to MGM Hospital but could not survive.

As soon as the police received information, a team led by SDPO Ajit Kujur, Inspector Manoj Gupta and Chakulia Police Station In-charge Santosh Kumar reached the village and launched an investigation. The police detained over a dozen villagers for questioning, including the goat owner Harbind Nayak, who was arrested.

“We have detained multiple individuals and are conducting a thorough investigation. Those responsible for taking the law into their own hands will face strict action,” said Chakulia Police Station In-charge Santosh Kumar.

The brutal lynching has sparked concerns over rising incidents of vigilante justice in rural areas. Authorities have warned against mob violence and urged people to report crimes to the police instead of resorting to unlawful actions. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” Inspector Manoj Gupta emphasized.

To prevent any further unrest, a heavy police force has been deployed in the village and security has been heightened. Senior officers are closely monitoring the situation to ensure peace and order.
