P N Bose’s letter to JN Tata paved way for Jamshedpur’s steel legacy

Discovery of Iron Ore in Mayurbhanj Led to the Birth of Tata Steel

It was written on February 24, 1904, by pioneering geologist

Jamshedpur: A historic letter written by pioneering geologist P N Bose on February 24, 1904, played a crucial role in shaping India’s steel industry. Addressed to industrialist J N Tata, the letter highlighted the presence of high-quality iron ore in the Gorumahisani hills of Mayurbhanj and the availability of coal in Jharia. This vital information laid the foundation for the establishment of Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) in Sakchi, which later became Jamshedpur.

P N Bose began his career with the Geological Service of India before retiring in 1904 to take up the role of Principal Geologist in the Princely State of Mayurbhanj. His most notable achievement was the discovery of iron ore in Gorumahisani, a finding that would prove instrumental in India’s industrial progress.

Following Bose’s letter, the Tatas intensified their efforts to set up a steel plant. By 1906, the Government of India removed barriers to the project and assured its support by committing to purchase steel for a designated period and offering additional assistance. On August 26, 1907, Tata Iron and Steel Company was officially registered in India with an initial capital of ₹2,31,75,000. Construction of the steel plant began in 1908, and on February 16, 1912, production officially commenced, marking a new era in Indian industry.

Before discovering the rich iron ore deposits in Mayurbhanj, the Tata family had explored several locations in their quest for raw materials. They initially identified iron at Lohara and coal at Warora in the Chanda district of the Central Provinces, but both proved unsuitable for steel production. During a visit to the Nagpur secretariat, Dorabji Tata came across a geological map showcasing high-quality iron ore in Dhalli-Rajhara. However, due to the lack of cokable coal and water resources, this site was also deemed unfit.

Ultimately, it was Bose’s discovery and timely letter that changed the course of history, leading to the creation of India’s first steel plant and shaping the industrial future of Jamshedpur.
