Jamshedpur, July 15: The healthcare landscape for prisoners in Jamshedpur’s Ghaghidih jail has been transformed with the introduction of telemedicine services. This innovative approach, implemented on the directives of the Supreme Court, aims to address the persistent issue of doctor shortages in correctional facilities while ensuring timely medical care for inmates.
Two doctors from Sadar Hospital have been appointed to spearhead this initiative. Through telemedicine, these healthcare professionals can now remotely assess prisoners’ health conditions, prescribe medications, and offer medical advice without the need for in-person consultations. This system not only improves access to healthcare for prisoners but also enhances efficiency in medical service delivery within the jail system.
The process involves a designated ‘spokesperson’ within the jail who communicates the prisoner’s health condition to the doctor. Based on this information, the doctor can then provide appropriate medical guidance and prescriptions. In just the first two days of implementation, over a dozen prisoners have already benefited from this telemedicine service.
Dr. Rajiv Sharma has been appointed as the monitoring officer for the telemedicine program at Sadar Hospital, overseeing its smooth operation and effectiveness. The initiative, currently operational in Ghaghidih Central Jail is set to expand soon to Ghatsila Jail, where inmates will receive treatment through a connection with the sub-divisional hospital.
