Shreyas Iyer Replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India’s New T20I Captain

New Delhi (IANS): The BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Saturday finally cleared the intense speculation surrounding the future of the India men’s T20I captaincy. In a major leadership shake-up, the selectors appointed Shreyas Iyer to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain, handing him his first assignment for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

India will play two T20Is in Dublin on June 26 and 28, before heading to England for a five-match series from July 1 to 11. By placing Shreyas—the current ODI vice-captain—at the helm, the BCCI signals a fresh era for India in the shortest format, eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Selection Panel Looks to the Future

Suryakumar Yadav’s prolonged lean patch forced the hands of the selectors and team management, who used Saturday’s meeting to finalize Shreyas as the new T20I leader.

While the committee initially explored keeping Suryakumar in charge through the England tour, and also considered Hardik Pandya for the role, Shreyas ultimately won over the decision-makers. His sharp leadership skills and the unanimous respect he commands in both the IPL and domestic circuits gave him the edge. Furthermore, Suryakumar’s extended struggles and the fact that he turns 36 in September pushed the board toward a more forward-looking choice.

Contrasting Fortunes for Two Stars

Suryakumar led India to a historic Men’s T20 World Cup title defense on home soil in March, but his recent form dipped drastically. He managed just 270 runs across 13 innings for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, averaging a meager 20.76. His World Cup contribution—242 runs at a strike rate of 136.72—was similarly modest.

Conversely, Iyer’s promotion marks a stunning career turnaround. The selectors had excluded him from India’s T20I plans after December 2023, but he forced his way back through consistent IPL batting and excellent leadership credentials. Iyer previously captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 IPL title, guided both Delhi Capitals (2020) and Punjab Kings (2025) to IPL finals, and led Mumbai to victory in the 2024/25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

A New Chapter

Though selected as an injury replacement for Tilak Varma during the recent home T20I series against New Zealand, Iyer never made the starting eleven. Now 31, Iyer returns to the T20I squad as India’s 15th captain in the format, taking on the responsibility of guiding the team through its next competitive phase.

This decision marks the second consecutive year that the BCCI has replaced an Indian captain shortly after an ICC trophy win. In March 2025, Rohit Sharma led India to a Champions Trophy triumph, yet Shubman Gill replaced him as ODI captain before the October tour of Australia. With today’s announcement, June 6 stands as the day India officially shifted its T20I vision toward the future under Shreyas Iyer.
