Jamshedpur, May 26: A momentous occasion unfolded on Sunday at the tribal Santhal Jaherthan complex in Kadma as the statue of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, revered as the father of the Olchiki script, was unveiled. The unveiling ceremony coincided with a blood donation camp, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian efforts alongside cultural recognition.
Chief guest Professor Dr. Hiralal Murmu and social worker cum Ranchi High Court advocate Madan Mohan Soren had the honor of unveiling the statue. Professor Dr. Hiralal Murmu underscored the significance of blood donation, citing its origins during the First World War in 1942. Despite the annual consumption of about 5 crore units of blood in India, rural areas still lack awareness about blood donation. However, there has been a notable increase in awareness within tribal communities, signifying positive societal progress.
Madan Mohan Soren highlighted Pandit Raghunath Murmu’s historic contribution in inventing the Olchiki script, which granted the Santhal community a distinct identity. The inclusion of Santhali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution in 2003 marked a significant milestone. He advocated for further promotion of Olchiki as a common language and urged for constitutional recognition of the Sarna religion, stressing its vital role in preserving tribal culture and heritage.
The event also witnessed enthusiastic participation in the blood donation camp organized by the tribal Santhal Jaherthan Committee. A total of 59 units of blood were collected, demonstrating the community’s willingness to contribute to humanitarian causes. Bhua Hansda of the committee expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response, highlighting the spirit of solidarity among the participants.
