Speeding truck leaves trail of destruction in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, June 28: Panic gripped the Birsanagar locality late Saturday night after a speeding sand-laden 407 truck went on a destructive rampage, crushing four parked motorcycles, ramming into a Maruti Baleno, and smashing a boundary wall before coming to a halt. While the incident caused extensive property damage, no casualties were reported.

According to local residents, the truck was moving at a dangerously high speed through the densely populated Birsanagar settlement when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
Witnesses claimed the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, though police are yet to officially confirm the allegation.

The out-of-control truck first ploughed into four motorcycles parked along the roadside, leaving them badly mangled.

It then crashed into a boundary wall before slamming into a parked Maruti Baleno, causing severe damage to the car. The loud impact jolted residents awake, prompting dozens of people to rush out of their homes and gather at the accident site.

Eyewitnesses said the driver abandoned the vehicle immediately after the crash and fled the scene, leaving behind the damaged truck. His whereabouts remain unknown.

Angered by the incident, local residents staged a road blockade on the Birsanagar main road on Sunday morning, demanding immediate compensation for the owners of the damaged vehicles. Protesters also called for the swift arrest of the absconding driver and strict legal action against the vehicle owner.

Residents further alleged that the route where the accident occurred is frequently used for the illegal transportation of sand. They claimed that sand-laden vehicles regularly ply through the area at high speed, posing a serious threat to public safety, and accused the administration of failing to curb the alleged illegal mining and transportation activities.

Following the protest, police reached the spot and initiated efforts to restore normal traffic while engaging with the agitating residents. The damaged truck was seized, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Police officials said efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver and ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Authorities have also assured that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over reckless driving, the movement of overloaded sand-carrying vehicles through residential areas, and the urgent need for stricter enforcement to prevent such potentially catastrophic accidents.
