Odisha Wins Hockey Gold, Jharkhand Secures Silver: KITG 2026

Raipur: Odisha cemented its status as the powerhouse of Indian hockey by clinching both the men’s and women’s gold medals at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026. In a high-stakes men’s final at the Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium, Odisha defeated Jharkhand 4-1, leaving the Jharkhand side with a hard-fought silver medal and a prominent spot on the national podium.

Dominance on the Turf

The tournament showcased the sheer grit of tribal athletes from India’s forest belts, with the final results reflecting a shift toward professionalized grassroots talent:

  • Men’s Division: Odisha’s clinical 4-1 victory over Jharkhand earned them the top spot, while host Chhattisgarh took home the bronze.

  • Women’s Division: Odisha narrowly edged out a resilient Mizoram 1-0 in a tense championship match. Jharkhand’s women’s team also delivered a stellar performance to claim the bronze medal.

The double gold victory for Odisha and the podium finishes for Jharkhand and Mizoram highlight a broader movement where traditional skills, once honed with wooden branches in village clearings, are now being refined on international-standard turf.

A Growing Ecosystem for Excellence

Former Olympians and coaches credit this success to a strengthening grassroots ecosystem. Ajit Lakhra, a 1992 Barcelona Olympian and current head coach at the Bilaspur Centre of Excellence, noted that structured guidance is finally meeting natural talent.

“The entire system, from grassroots to senior levels, is becoming stronger,” Lakhra told SAI Media. “Athletes from tribal regions are benefiting as their natural instincts are now refined with proper training.”

Manohar Topno, who competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that tribal communities play hockey “naturally.” He credited the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for providing a platform that allows these players to rebuild their communities through sport.

Breaking Barriers: Sports Science and Social Change

The 2026 Games highlighted a significant technological leap for tribal athletes. Resources once reserved for elite national squads—sports science, physiotherapists, and video analysis—are now accessible to players from remote regions.

This professionalization is having a profound social impact:

  • Mainstreaming: Programs like the sports ministry’s ASMITA are successfully integrating women players into the national fabric.

  • Alternative Paths: In regions previously impacted by socio-economic unrest, hockey has emerged as a unifying force and a viable career path.

  • Increased Ambition: Asrita Lakra, a Hockey India member, noted that better facilities have significantly boosted player morale, turning participants into genuine national contenders.

From the dusty fields of Bastar to the podiums in Raipur, the journey of these athletes is doing more than just winning medals—it is rewriting the social fabric of tribal India and ensuring the future of Indian hockey remains bright.
