Jharkhand Govt Issues Statewide Alert After 4 Malaria Deaths near Jamshedpur

Ranchi: The Jharkhand government issued a statewide health alert on Wednesday following the deaths of at least four malaria patients in East Singhbhum district.

Ajay Kumar Singh, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Department, directed all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to deploy immediate, comprehensive measures to control and prevent the spread of the vector-borne disease.

The health department ordered high-risk districts to implement localized action plans on a war footing, intensify ground surveillance, and fix strict accountability across all administrative levels.

Mass Fever Surveys and Rapid Testing

Under the new directives, Multipurpose Health Workers (MPWs) will launch active field surveys in areas reporting high incidences of fever. Health workers must test every suspected malaria case immediately and initiate treatment for confirmed infections without delay.

The state directive explicitly mandates that civic health authorities must admit critically ill patients to hospitals and ensure continuous medical monitoring. Furthermore, the detection of any new malaria case will automatically trigger a compulsory mass fever survey across that entire locality.

To streamline the grassroots response, the health department is compiling village-wise malaria logs. Authorities are equipping frontline health workers in high-burden villages with Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits and essential anti-malarial drugs. Community Health Centres (CHCs) have also received instructions to stockpile testing materials and scale up insecticide spraying and anti-larval fogging drives.

Three-Tier Monitoring System Introduced

To ensure the drive’s efficacy, the government has institutionalized a strict three-tier review mechanism:

• Weekly reviews at the Community Health Centre (CHC) level.

• Fortnightly reviews led by District Civil Surgeons.

• Monthly evaluation meetings chaired directly by the respective Deputy Commissioners.

Alongside clinical measures, the state will launch an expansive public awareness campaign to educate residents on mosquito-control habits and the critical importance of early diagnostic testing. Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh ordered all district chiefs to personally monitor these control programs to prevent further loss of life.
