NH-33 ‘Black Spots’ to Get ₹84 Crore Facelift: 2 Underpasses and 1 Flyover to Reduce Accidents in 18 Months

Jamshedpur: In a major relief for commuters traveling on the lifeline of Jharkhand, Bengal, and Odisha—National Highway 33 (NH-33)—the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to construct two underpasses and one flyover. The mega-project, aimed at eliminating dangerous ‘black spots’ and halting recurring road accidents, will be built at an estimated cost of ₹84 crores.

The project has received formal approval from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and NHAI has officially signed an agreement with the executing agency to begin construction.

Timeline and Implementation

Following the ministry’s green light, the NHAI administration issued a work order to M/s SRC Mathura on May 21, 2026. A strict 18-month deadline has been set to complete this ambitious project. To ensure high quality and timely progress, senior NHAI officials will conduct daily monitoring of the construction work.

Project Breakdown & Location Benefits

The construction will target three heavily accident-prone zones across Ghatshila, Bahragora, and Chandil:

  • Ghatshila (Phuldungri): A 675 km long underpass will be constructed here. This will provide a safe route for locals trying to reach the nearby hospital and bus stand without risking highway traffic.
  • Bahragora Junction: A 33 km long underpass will be built to ease heavy traffic congestion and provide rural residents with a safe crossing.
  • Chandil Junction: A 85 km long flyover will be constructed at the NH-33 and NH-32 (Ghodalengi-Purulia Road) intersection. This will seamlessly segregate local and highway traffic, preventing severe traffic jams.

Why the Project is Crucial

According to local police data, these three designated black spots have turned into death traps over the years. In the last three years alone, 12 people have lost their lives and 35 others have been severely injured in various road mishaps at these spots. This alarming data prompted urgent calls for structural intervention.

Political Push and Key Statements

The project gained momentum after a direct intervention by Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, who met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to highlight the “Red Zone” dangers of NH-33. Following the Minister’s directives, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared and subsequently approved.
