New Delhi/Ranchi: In adherence to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is undergoing significant revisions to the curriculum. A seven-member panel, headed by CI Isak, has proposed noteworthy changes, including the addition of subjects like Ramayana and Mahabharata to social science courses.
The recommendations also extend to the restructuring of history into four distinct periods, a departure from the previous three divisions of ancient, medieval, and modern India. The proposed structure includes the ancient period, medieval period, British period, and modern India.
In a move reflecting a cultural emphasis, the panel has suggested altering the country’s name to “India” and “Hindu victory.” This aligns with previous recommendations, such as the change from “India” to “Bharat” in textbooks and the inclusion of classical history in the curriculum. The panel also proposes highlighting Hindu victories in textbooks from classes 3 to 12.
CI Isaac emphasized the importance of including excerpts from the Ramayana and Mahabharata in social science courses. He stated that integrating these epics into the curriculum would provide students with insights into patriotism and their nation from an early age. Furthermore, the panel recommends displaying the Preamble of the Constitution in local languages on school walls and incorporating Vedic and Ayurvedic knowledge into the Indian Knowledge System.
In response to these recommendations, CI Isaac issued a statement underscoring the belief that introducing subjects rooted in Indian culture would foster a deeper connection to the nation among students, nurturing a sense of love for their country and culture.
