Mamata Government Revokes Adani’s Rs 25,000 Crore Tajpur Port Project, Citing New Tender Plans

Kolkata: In a surprising turn of events, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has decided to withdraw the Rs 25,000 crore Tajpur Port development project from the Adani Group. The project, awarded to Adani under the Bengal Global Business Project in 2022, is now set to undergo a fresh tendering process, as announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Remarkably, Adani Group representatives were absent from the event where Mamata Banerjee made the announcement, raising eyebrows over the unexpected decision. It has been reported that the Mamata government canceled the Letter of Intent (LoI) previously issued to Adani Group, with the Chief Minister herself confirming the decision. Mamata stated that new tenders for the Tajpur Port project would be issued, open to participation from any interested company.

Political observers speculate that Mamata Banerjee’s move to cancel the project awarded to Adani Group may be linked to the controversy involving TMC MP Mahua Moitra. Mahua Moitra has faced allegations related to the cash-for-query case, particularly concerning questions raised against the Adani Group. The cancellation of Adani’s project could be interpreted as a supportive stance by Mamata Banerjee towards Mahua Moitra. The situation now awaits the response from the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding the accusations against Mahua Moitra.

It’s worth noting that opposition parties, including those aligned with the INDIA alliance, had consistently questioned the decision to grant the Tajpur Port project to the Adani Group. Despite the controversy surrounding Mahua Moitra, Mamata Banerjee had maintained silence on the matter until now.
