Muslim voters support Banna Gupta, but Saryu Roy wins Jamshedpur West

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur West assembly election, held amidst intense political rivalry, saw Saryu Roy emerge victorious, despite Banna Gupta, the Congress candidate and outgoing minister, enjoying strong backing from Muslim voters. Roy secured a commanding lead in several key areas, but the Muslim-dominated localities delivered substantial support for Gupta, particularly at booths where Roy received no votes at all. In numerous polling stations in these areas, only Congress managed to secure votes, while Roy’s BJP-backed campaign registered zero support, showcasing a clear division in voting patterns along communal lines.

In contrast, Roy gained significant ground in the Hindu-majority areas of Sonari, Kadma, Bistupur, and Sakchi, which played a crucial role in his triumph. While Gupta had managed to secure a lead of 5,000 votes in Sonari during the 2019 elections, Roy’s support surged dramatically, with an increase of 17,000 to 18,000 votes in this election. Similarly, in Kadma, where Gupta had previously led, Roy gained an additional 8,000 to 9,000 votes, demonstrating his broad appeal across these constituencies. Despite this, Gupta’s efforts to garner votes in Dimna Road fell short, with the overall vote share from Hindu-majority areas still failing to meet the needed threshold for victory.

Gupta’s defeat can be attributed to a combination of factors, primarily the inadequate groundwork by his close associates, who failed to engage effectively with the electorate and communicate the achievements of his tenure. This lack of engagement in key areas such as Sonari and Kadma, where local workers could not gain the trust of the public, further led to a disconnect between Gupta and potential voters. Additionally, Gupta’s reliance on his personal network, while substantial in areas like Bistupur and Mango, ultimately proved to be his downfall. Many of his so-called close supporters were either ineffective or engaged in actions that alienated genuine voters, distancing Gupta from the real community leaders who could have bolstered his candidacy.

While Gupta’s performance was strong in Muslim-majority booths, the overall voting trends highlighted a shift in support, with voters in Hindu-majority areas gravitating toward Roy. This outcome not only reflects the complexities of the region’s electoral landscape but also marks a crucial turning point for Congress, which will need to reassess its strategies moving forward to regain lost ground in future elections.
