NIT Jamshedpur Hosts 5-Day Faculty Upgradation Programme

Jamshedpur: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur is conducting a five-day Faculty Upgradation Programme to enhance institutional capacity in student mentoring, psychosocial well-being, counselling support systems, outcome-oriented pedagogy, and inclusive academic practices.

The programme is being organized in line with the directives of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The programme, being hosted under the leadership of Director Prof. Goutam Sutradhar, seeks to strengthen faculty capabilities in addressing the evolving academic and emotional needs of students.

Experts Discuss Student Challenges and Support Mechanisms

On the second day, the first technical session, titled “Identifying Visible and Invisible Barriers Faced by Students,” was addressed by Vishnu Suresh, Psychiatric Social Work Tutor at the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi.

The session explored the academic, emotional, psychological, behavioural, and socio-environmental challenges that impact student performance and retention. Participants were introduced to early identification techniques, psychosocial intervention strategies, and evidence-based mentoring practices designed to promote student resilience, emotional intelligence, and holistic development. The role of faculty mentors in creating safe and inclusive learning environments was also emphasized.

Focus on Outcome-Based Education and Active Learning

The second session, titled “Outcome-Based Education and Active Pedagogy,” was conducted by N. T. Rupa, a psychiatric professional from Kolkata. The lecture highlighted the integration of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) frameworks with learner-centric teaching methodologies to improve student engagement and learning outcomes.

Key topics discussed included constructive alignment of course outcomes, competency mapping, collaborative learning, experiential education, formative assessment methods, and continuous improvement in teaching-learning processes. Participants also explored innovative pedagogical approaches aimed at fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and active classroom participation.
