Ranchi: Angry residents blocked roads and took to the streets on Thursday to protest the alleged mob lynching of a local youth, demanding that police arrest every person involved in the murder.
A large crowd staged a demonstration at Makhmandro Chowk under the Ratu police station limits. Protesters burned tyres and shouted slogans against the police administration. Normalcy returned to the area only after police officials personally assured the crowd that they would take swift action.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the two main accused, Indrajit Sahu and Vikas Sahu. Officers are currently conducting raids to capture a third named suspect, Santosh Sahu.
The violence erupted on Wednesday in Lehna village, where a mob allegedly assaulted 25-year-old Rohit Mirdha. Rescuers rushed Mirdha to the hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
The victim was the nephew of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha state vice-president Kamlesh Ram. Following a complaint from the victim’s father, Udit Mirdha, the Ratu police registered an FIR naming Indrajit Sahu, Santosh Sahu, Vikas Sahu, and 10 to 15 unidentified individuals.
In his complaint, Udit Mirdha stated that attackers beat Rohit in the village and mistreated family members who tried to intervene.
Conversely, Indrajit Sahu’s wife, Sharda Devi, filed a counter-complaint with the police. She alleged that Rohit made inappropriate advances and behaved indecently toward her, which prompted villagers to gather and assault him.
The victim’s father denied her allegations, calling them baseless. Instead, he claimed a conspiracy targeted his son, pointing to an ongoing land dispute in the village.
Police officials state they are investigating the case from all angles, examining the evidence alongside the complaints from both families.
