Jamshedpur, May 5: The Outreach Department of Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), Jamshedpur, in association with the East Singhbhum Police, organized Cervical and Breast Cancer Awareness Program and Health Camp at Police Line in Jamshedpur on Sunday.

This crucial initiative, conceived under the guidance of Dr. Astha Raman, a KMC Manipal alumna and spouse of SSP East Singhbhum, aimed to educate and provide essential health screenings to police personnel. Recognizing the high-stress nature and demanding schedules often experienced by law enforcement, the program specifically addressed preventable health conditions, with a primary focus on cervical and breast cancers, which remain significant public health challenges across India.

The awareness session saw enthusiastic participation from approximately 100 police personnel (both female and male), while the health camp extended its benefits to over 230 individuals who received free on-site screenings and medical consultations. A dedicated multidisciplinary team from MTMC, comprising experienced doctors, optometrists, skilled lab technicians, and supportive staff, spearheaded the event.

The awareness session featured insightful discussions led by experts on the risk factors, characteristic signs and symptoms, and effective prevention strategies for both cervical and breast cancers. Dr. Ojasvi Shanker, Associate Professor at MTMC, and Dr. Arunima Verma, Chief Medical Superintendent & HOD Surgery at Tata Motors Hospital, placed significant emphasis on the critical role of HPV vaccination, the importance of regular screening methods such as Pap smears and VIA, and the practice of breast self-examination. The interactive nature of the session encouraged participants to actively engage, ask questions, and clarify any concerns related to women’s health, fostering a valuable learning environment.

Complementing the educational component, MTMC conducted a comprehensive health screening camp, offering a range of fundamental diagnostic services. These included vital blood pressure measurements, body mass index (BMI) assessments, random blood sugar testing, and hemoglobin (Hb) estimation. Following their screenings, all individuals received personalized health advice tailored to their results. Participants identified with abnormal values or elevated risk factors were promptly referred to advanced healthcare centers for thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.
Kishore Kaushal (IPS), Senior Superintendent of Police, and the esteemed Chief Guest for the event, expressed his sincere appreciation to MTMC for organizing this impactful initiative. Dr. Vinita Singh, General Manager – Medical Services at TMH, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor, while Kumar Shivashish (IPS), SP, City, East Singhbhum, emphasized the paramount importance of screening and early detection of cervical and breast cancer, alongside ensuring the dissemination of accurate information to the community. The event was also honored by the presence of other senior officials from the East Singhbhum Police and prominent figures from MTMC Jamshedpur, including the In-Charge Dean, Advisor, Head of Outreach, and other senior officials of Manipal Tata Medical College.
