Loyola School Hosts Workshop to Sharpen Debate and Public Speaking Skills

In an effort to nurture articulate and confident communicators, Loyola School Jamshedpur organized an engaging workshop on debate and elocution on Friday. The initiative, led by the school’s Debate and Elocution Club, aimed at enhancing students’ public speaking and critical thinking abilities.

The session was graced by Principal Vinod Fernandes and Vice Principal Jayanthi Sheshadri, along with distinguished resource persons Shankar Ramalingam and Natasha Aziz from the Kolkata debating circuit.

The workshop began with a formal introduction of the speakers, highlighting their vast experience in debating, public speaking, and academic mentoring. Shankar Ramalingam, an accomplished Chartered and Cost Accountant and a key member of the Jesuit Alumni Associations of India, shared his expertise on structured argument-building and effective rebuttal techniques. Natasha Aziz, an advocate practicing at the Calcutta High Court and a seasoned debate coordinator, emphasized the importance of clarity, confidence, and body language in impactful communication.

Around 32 students from Classes IX to XII, selected based on their interest and aptitude, actively participated in the session. The workshop featured interactive discussions, practical exercises, and real-time feedback, enabling students to refine their speaking skills.

A highlight of the event was an impromptu debate on the topic: “Parents should be allowed access to the social media of children till they are 16.” The activity encouraged students to think critically, articulate their viewpoints, and respond effectively to opposing arguments.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Principal Vinod Fernandes, who appreciated the resource persons for their insightful guidance and commended the students for their enthusiastic participation.
