Jamshedpur: In a compassionate gesture, Tata Steel has waived off pending medical dues of a burn injury patient undergoing treatment at Tata Main Hospital, offering significant relief to a financially vulnerable family.
Patient Mehandi Kumari (IP/2026/014783) was admitted to the hospital on April 6 under the Department of Burn Care Unit (BCU) and Plastic Surgery after sustaining scald burn injuries caused by hot tea. She was initially brought to the emergency department and subsequently admitted for specialized care.
Hospital sources informed that the patient was treated as per standard burn management protocols, along with necessary supportive measures. After receiving appropriate medical care, she has now been discharged in stable condition.
A press communique issued by the company said: “ The total cost of treatment amounted to Rs. 61,554, out of which the family managed to pay Rs. 27,500. However, an outstanding amount of Rs. 34,054 remained unpaid. The patient’s family, who run a tea stall, had expressed their inability to clear the remaining dues. Tata Steel took a decision to waive off the entire pending amount of Rs. 34,054, ensuring the patient’s discharge without any financial burden”.
Notably, officials clarified that no political entity or non-governmental organization was involved in this decision. The waiver was granted solely at the discretion of Tata Steel as part of its commitment to community welfare and social responsibility.
