JNU sexual harassment case: Delhi court grants relief to Akoijam

The Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday barred the Delhi Police from taking coercive steps against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.
The court directed the police to give Akoijam a seven-day written notice before any potential arrest.
Special Judge passed the order while disposing of the Inner Manipur MP’s anticipatory bail application.
The police assured the court that Akoijam was actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The court ordered Akoijam to continue cooperating and to provide contact numbers of two family members.
Police can approach the court again if the lawmaker fails to cooperate with the probe.
The court also instructed the investigating agency to complete the investigation and file the final chargesheet quickly.
Eleven female students of Jawaharlal Nehru University had filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May.
JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit dismissed Akoijam from service on October 9 following an internal inquiry.
The Delhi High Court recently stayed the university’s dismissal order on November 2 after hearing Akoijam’s petition.
Justice Anup J. Bhambhani issued notices to JNU and scheduled the next hearing for January next year.
Akoijam previously appeared before the Vasant Kunj North police station on October 15 after receiving summons.
He termed the entire development a political matter and pledged full cooperation with the investigating authorities.
He subsequently filed an anticipatory bail plea to secure legal protection against sudden police action.
