Tata Steel Plans to Ban Two-Wheelers Inside Jamshedpur Plant, Internal Bus Shuttle Service Proposed

Jamshedpur

In a major move aimed at enhancing workplace safety, the Tata Steel management is planning to launch a dedicated internal bus shuttle service for its employees, mirroring a system already operational at Tata Motors. Once the new system is implemented, the entry of personal two-wheelers inside the plant premises will be completely prohibited.

Under the proposed plan, massive parking facilities will be set up near all four major entry gates of the Jamshedpur plant: Burmamines, Sakchi, Jugsalai, and Bistupur. Employees will be required to park their personal vehicles at these designated lots and commute to their respective departments using the company-provided bus service.

‘Zero Accident’ Goal Inspires the Transition

DB Sundara Ramam, Vice President (Corporate Services), Tata Steel, while interacting with media after an event at the Beldih Club on Sunday said that employee safety remains the company’s uppermost priority. Ramam noted that the high volume of two-wheelers currently operating inside the plant poses a significant safety challenge.

He said: “Several departments within the plant have successfully maintained a ‘Zero Accident’ record for years. If one department can achieve this milestone, others can replicate it. The reduction of vehicular congestion inside the plant is a critical step toward universalizing this safety standard.”

The Vice President also drew upon past experiences to justify the move, recalling that contract workers previously commuted within the plant on bicycles, which led to frequent mishaps. A substantial decline in accidents was recorded once bicycle movement was restricted inside the operational areas.

Final Roadmap Pending Union Talks

While the blueprint for the transit transition is ready, management has clarified that the project is currently in its proposal stage. A formal dialogue will soon be initiated with the Tata Workers’ Union to address worker logistics and finalize the implementation timeline.
