Bengal Police Arrest Former TMC MLA Jahangir Khan After High Court Lifts Protection

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Jahangir Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border by the West Bengal Police on Monday. Khan recently found himself at the centre of a major political controversy during the state assembly elections, which led authorities to order a repoll in his Falta constituency due to reported irregularities.

The arrest took place after the Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench declined to extend Khan’s temporary protection from arrest across five separate FIRs (First Information Reports). Khan had originally turned to the High Court to block the West Bengal Police from taking coercive action, claiming that opponents were systematically filing fabricated criminal cases against him.

Khan’s legal push came just two days after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari publicly vowed to step in and personally handle the case of “Pushpa”—a direct jab at the former MLA.

Speaking to BJP workers in Falta on May 16—just five days before the repoll—CM Adhikari issued a stern warning without explicitly naming Khan. “He is a designated, highly notorious criminal, and I will personally handle his case,” Adhikari declared.
