Jamshedpur Retailers joint hands to oppose hike in shop rent

Jamshedpur, June 10: Members of Retail Merchant Welfare Association of Sakchi convened a meeting to discuss strategy to protest against the hike in shop rents announced recently by the state government.

The traders said they used to pay Rs 20 to Rs 50 as monthly rent of shops to Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) prior to rent revision. Now the JNAC has sent notices to shop owners asking them to pay rents on per square feet basis, leading the rents to swell up to Rs 16,000 to Rs 57,000 per shop, said the traders.

Terming the government decision to implement the hike as arbitrary and unjustified, the outfit members announced to go on a phased agitation against it.

After the meeting, a door-to-door campaign was launched by the outfit members. Many shop owners were present at a meeting held later at Chamber Bhavan, Bistupur, under the aegis of Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).
