Jamshedpur markets abuzz ahead of Saraswati Puja

Jamshedpur, Jan 31: As Saraswati Puja approaches, there is a surge of enthusiasm among educational institutions and students across Jamshedpur. Sculptors are busy giving the final touches to intricately crafted idols of Maa Saraswati. Celebrations are set to take place in various locations, including NIT, MGM Medical College in Adityapur and numerous pandals in areas like Circuit House, Golmuri, Sakchi and Mango. Preparations are in their final stages, with elaborate pandals and vibrant electrical decorations adorning the Circuit House area.

The festival will be celebrated on both February 2 and 3. Pandit Suraj Jha highlighted the significance of the festival, stating, “On the day of Puja, students pray to Maa Saraswati for wisdom and a bright future.” Many devotees, both those participating in collective rituals and those performing Puja at home, have already made advance payments for idols.

Sculptor Bharat Pal, who is crafting Maa Saraswati’s idols in Sakchi, shared insights into the market trends. “We have created idols ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 6,000. Larger idols have been made on order,” he said. Skilled artisans in Sakchi Chhayanagar, Kashidih and Mango Teachers Colony are now putting the finishing touches on the idols.

Fruit market gears up for Saraswati Puja

With the city gearing up for celebrations, Puja committees are busy finalizing decorations and pandals. Meanwhile, the fruit market is witnessing increased activity, with prices of essential puja fruits rising by about 10%. Fruit vendor Ajay Kumar noted, “Though there is no rush yet, people will start purchasing puja fruits from tomorrow.”

Special fruits such as bananas, apples, oranges, sweet potatoes, carrots, plums and pomegranates are prominently displayed in markets. Vendors are also stocking puja essentials like earthen pots and incense burners, adding to the festive spirit.

Additionally, in Chhayanagar, Bhuinyadih, a female sculptor is giving the final touches to a Saraswati Mata statue, reflecting the dedication and craftsmanship of local artisans.

Current fruit prices per kg:

Apples: Rs. 120-140

Imported Apples: Rs. 220-240

Oranges: Rs. 60-80

Pomegranates: Rs. 160

Sweet potatoes: Rs. 50-60

Bananas: Rs. 50-60 per dozen (Puja bananas Rs. 60-80)

Guavas: Rs. 80-100

Coconuts: Rs. 35-40 per piece
