Jamshedpur: Food Safety Dept raid uncovers large-scale spice adulteration

Jamshedpur, March 20: The consumption of adulterated spices in Jamshedpur poses a significant health risk to its residents, with reports indicating a pervasive presence of such products throughout the city, particularly during festivals like Holi. Illegal activities, including the clandestine grinding and packaging of adulterated spices, are rampant in various locations, contributing to this alarming trend.

Recently, authorities from the Food Safety Department conducted a raid in Harhargattu, Bagbera, uncovering a large-scale operation involved in grinding and packing adulterated spices. These spices, produced within domestic facilities, were distributed to markets across Sakchi, Bistupur, and Jugsalai. The raid seized several items, including wood sawdust and artificial coloring agents, which were being mixed with spices during the manufacturing process.

Investigations revealed that wood sawdust was surreptitiously added to coriander powder, while artificial colors were mixed with red chili powder. Shockingly, samples of adulterated spices were collected during the raid, awaiting laboratory analysis to confirm the extent of contamination. Additionally, it was discovered that garam masala was adulterated with wood fragments, a concerning revelation given the potential health hazards associated with such practices.

Furthermore, many households rely on branded spice products, assuming their safety and quality. However, adulteration is not limited to unbranded products, with instances of contamination reported even in packaged spices. For instance, red chili powder often contains adulterants like red brick or artificial coloring agents, compromising its purity and safety.

Turmeric powder, another essential spice, is frequently adulterated with chemicals like Metanil Yellow, posing a significant health risk, including the potential for cancer. Similarly, coriander powder may contain husk or flour bran, impacting its aroma and purity.

The adulteration of cinnamon with guava bark and black pepper with papaya seeds further underscores the pervasive nature of this issue, with profit-driven motives compromising consumer safety. The consequences of consuming such adulterated products range from compromised health to the increased risk of chronic diseases like cancer.

In light of these findings, Dr. Arun Kumar, a cancer specialist, emphasizes the importance of avoiding adulterated food items and urges consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing spices and other food products.
