Jamshedpur, June 30: The city witnessed a gathering of poetry enthusiasts at the Tagore Society (Rabindra Bhavan) on the occasion of International Tagore Poetry Reading Day. The literary and cultural center of the city became a hub for recitations of poems composed by renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore. Ashish Chaudhuri, the Honorary General Secretary of the Tagore Society, provided insights into the significance of this day.

Chaudhuri shared that the roots of International Tagore Poetry Reading Day can be traced back to 1912 when Rabindranath Tagore recited selected poems from his iconic work, Gitanjali, at the residence of English poet Roden Stein. Esteemed poets of that time, including Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot, were captivated by Tagore’s compositions and recognized him as the leading poet of his era. This appreciation led to the nomination of Rabindranath Tagore for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he ultimately won in 1913. This poetry recitation event marked a historical moment, and in commemoration of this significant achievement, International Tagore Poetry Reading Day is celebrated every year on June 30th.

Chaudhuri emphasized the importance of this day for young poets, aspiring writers, and literature enthusiasts. He highlighted the significance of understanding Tagore’s timeless creations free from the constraints of time, allowing individuals to contribute to the literary world and benefit humanity through their own works. The event saw the participation of notable poets such as Rajanya Dandpat, Dutee Chakraborty, Madhuchanda Majumdar, Sangeeta Lahiri, Rachna Mahto, Shipra Mahanti, Shantanu Chakraborty, Kalyani Dasgupta, Achintam Gupta, Purabi Ghosh, Sabyasanchi Chand, Aseem Bagchi, T. Shashi, and Ghasiram Murmu. Poetry recitations took place in various languages, including three poems in English, one in Santhali, one in Sanskrit, one in Telugu, two in Hindi, and eighteen poems in Bengali. The event brought joy and appreciation to the city’s poetry lovers and literature enthusiasts.
