Jamshedpur, June 26: Tata Steel Vice President (Corporate Services) D.B. Sundara Ramam has expressed confidence that the long-pending Tata lease agreement will be finalized soon, paving the way for faster industrial growth and overall development of Jamshedpur.
Speaking to media on the sidelines of a CII event in Jamshedpur, Ramam said there are no major hurdles in the renewal process. “Efforts are being made at the government level to finalize the Tata lease agreement at the earliest. Once approved, it will give a significant boost to industrial development and the city’s infrastructure,” he said.
Ramam added that the Kolhan Commissioner had collected detailed information on the lease during the initial meeting.
He said discussions between Tata Steel and the state government have been positive and constructive.
“All the required documents have already been submitted to the government, and we are hopeful that a decision will be taken soon,” he said.
The lease renewal process gained momentum after Ravi Ranjan Vikram took charge as the Kolhan Commissioner.
The previous lease agreement between the Jharkhand government and Tata Steel was signed in 2005 and expired on December 31, 2025.
The lease , which was signed on August 20, 2005 was officially renewed for a period of 30-year, effective from January 1, 1996.
Following the expiry of the lease, the 10,852.27 acres of leased land in Jamshedpur has technically reverted to the Jharkhand government.
However, until a fresh agreement is signed, Tata Steel will continue to maintain civic services and essential infrastructure in the city as a caretaker.
The leased land is divided into five schedules, covering the steel plant, residential colonies, parks and community spaces, commercial and sub-leased areas, and vacant land earmarked for future development.
