Graduate turns entrepreneur: Satish Devgam’s journey from job seeker to successful farmer

Sanjay Mishra

Seraikela: In a remarkable tale of self-reliance, 25-year-old Satish Devgam, a graduate from Tata College Chaibasa, has turned his one-acre farm into a profitable venture, earning Rs 4 lakh annually through dragon fruit cultivation. Once searching for employment, he is now preparing to offer jobs to others, proving that entrepreneurship in agriculture can be a game-changer for young graduates.

A resident of Bada Bana village under Mudkum Panchayat, Saraikela block, Satish initially followed the conventional path after graduation, looking for stable employment. However, after multiple setbacks, he decided to focus on farming, using YouTube as his learning platform. Inspired by modern agricultural techniques, he implemented drip irrigation and adopted best practices to cultivate dragon fruit, a crop gaining popularity in Jharkhand’s Khunti district.

His perseverance has not only secured his own livelihood but has also made him a source of inspiration for other unemployed youths. Recognizing his hard-earned success, several Ho community organizations visited his village on Thursday and honored him with traditional clothes and a special fruit-harvesting basket. The event saw the presence of community leaders including Dr. Bablu Sundi, former Central President of Adivasi Ho Samaj and Vishnu Banra, National Kol Sena President, among others. They applauded Satish’s dedication and encouraged him to continue his journey toward empowering others.

Revolutionizing farming with dragon fruit

Satish chose dragon fruit farming after researching its health benefits and market potential. This exotic fruit, known for its diabetes control, immunity-boosting properties and ability to improve hemoglobin levels, is still an emerging crop in the region. Despite the absence of a permanent market, he has successfully built a customer base and continues to expand his operations.

“After graduation, I struggled to find a job, but then I turned to farming. I realized that with the right techniques, I could create my own source of income instead of waiting for opportunities,” Satish shared.

To make the most of his land, he adopted drip irrigation, which ensures efficient water usage while enhancing productivity. His methodical approach has made his farm a model for others looking to break free from unemployment through agriculture.

A vision for the future

With his business expanding, Satish now plans to hire workers, providing employment opportunities to those in need. If he receives government support, he hopes to set up a training center for young farmers interested in learning sustainable and profitable agricultural techniques.

“If I get the necessary support, I will expand this work and train others, helping more unemployed youth build their future in farming,” he stated.

Satish Devgam’s story is a powerful testament to self-reliance, perseverance and the transformative potential of modern agriculture. His journey from a job seeker to a successful entrepreneur serves as an inspiration to countless young people struggling with unemployment, proving that determination and knowledge can open doors to success.
