Jamshedpur: From the quiet classrooms of Loyola School to the dazzling world of cinema, actor-director Neeraj Kabi has carved a niche for himself through relentless dedication and artistic sincerity. Known for acclaimed performances in Ship of TheseusSacred GamesHichki, and Patal Lok, Kabi returned to his hometown Jamshedpur to inspire students of his alma mater.

In an exclusive conversation, Kabi opened up about his early days in Jamshedpur, his transition into acting, and his advice to young minds seeking to pursue cinema beyond the lure of glamour.

Q: You’ve come a long way from Loyola School, Jamshedpur to national recognition. How did your journey into cinema begin?

Neeraj Kabi: The journey has been long and full of learning. I completed my 10th and 12th from Loyola School between 1985 and 1987. Later, while studying for a diploma in computer science at Symbiosis College in Pune, I got seriously involved in theatre. In 1989, I acted in a Hindi play during the Mood Indigo Festival at IIT Powai — that moment changed my life and ignited my passion for acting.

Q: You’ve worked in both theatre and cinema. What draws you most to the stage and screen?

Neeraj Kabi: Theatre taught me discipline, emotional depth, and the soul of acting. Cinema, on the other hand, gives me a chance to reach out to a wider audience. What I love most is the ability to tell stories that impact people — that’s the real power of this medium.

Q: Many students still lean towards engineering or medicine. Do you think this mindset is changing?

Neeraj Kabi: Yes, there’s a noticeable shift. While many still pursue traditional careers, I do see a growing number of young minds interested in cinema and storytelling. It’s heartening. What’s important is to let them know that filmmaking isn’t just about luck or fame — it’s about relentless hard work and genuine passion.

Q: What message did you try to convey during your session with students today?

Neeraj Kabi: I emphasized that cinema is not only about name and fame. It’s a serious craft — a powerful form of communication that can shape society. Students need to understand the responsibility that comes with being an artist. It’s about storytelling with honesty, patience, and a deep understanding of human emotions.

Q: What’s the biggest misconception people have about actors and acting?

Neeraj Kabi: People often confuse acting with mere entertainment. But true acting is much deeper. It’s about becoming the character — psychologically, emotionally, and even spiritually. The difference between an entertainer and an actor is profound. You must live the character, not just perform it.

Q: Looking back at your own journey, what advice would you offer to aspiring filmmakers and actors?

Neeraj Kabi: Choose the road less traveled. Don’t chase only fame or money — pursue artistic fulfillment. Acting is a never-ending journey of self-discovery. Be prepared for struggle, but stay curious, stay humble, and keep learning.

Q: Do you feel a personal connection when you return to Jamshedpur?

Neeraj Kabi: Absolutely. I make it a point to visit my birthplace every year. Loyola shaped who I am today. Coming back and speaking to the next generation gives me great joy. If my story can inspire even one student to follow their passion, it’s worth it.
